One time Olympic gold medalist and current professional wrestler, Kurt Angle ran afoul of Virginia authorities recently, ultimately leading to DUI arrest that was reduced to a reckless driving charge.

Angle, in the area for a September 2011 a wrestling event at the Shenandoah County Fair, was observed driving late at night swerving across lanes on I-66.

Virginia State Troopers pulled over the wrestler and administered a breathalyzer test, which returned a result of  0.091 (the Virginia legal limit is a .08 blood alcohol level).

Two hours later Angle took a second breath test, registering a .06 – below the legal limit.

Initially hit with a DUI charge, Angle’s Dattorney stated that his client was merely overtired.  He attributed the swerving to Angle’s attempts to text the event promoter from behind the wheel.  As to the sobriety tests, according to a report from NVDaily.com, Angle’s attorney argued that,

“…the result from the initial roadside test “is so inherently unreliable and the protocols for its use so flawed that these results are inadmissible as evidence under Virginia law.”

Warren General District Court during which Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Michael Fleming subsequently amended the charge against Angle to reckless driving, which carries the same maximum penalty in Virginia as a first time DUI, 1 year in jail and a $2,500 fine.

Angle received the maximum fine of $2,500 from Warren County district judge, W. Dale Houff  but $1000 was suspended. Houff did not order any jail time for the wrestler.
