Young Women Growing as a Proportion of Fatal DUI Crashes

April 9, 2012 | No Comments ยป

Between 1996 and 2007 the once-sizeable gender gap between fatal DUI crashes has closed, according to a recent study. Conventional wisdom said that young men drink more and are thus involved in more fatal crashes involving alcohol. As of 2007, at a given blood alcohol level the gender differential for fatal crashes had equalized. A decade earlier, the risk of fatal crashes amongst you men was double that of young women.

While the reasons for this change aren’t entirely clear, what signs we do have point to young women taking greater risks on the road than in years past. Chief amongst those risks, according to the researchers involved in the study, are mixing alcohol with the kind of mobile digital distractions that have bloomed in popularity over the last decade: mobile phones, texting, etc.
